Bylaws and Elections

How TSA is governed, and how members elect the Board.

Bylaws

The bylaws define membership, officers, directors, elections, meetings and TSA’s governing procedures. Changes take effect only after approval through the process the bylaws set out.

Elections

Elections occur annually for Director seats on our nine-member working board, with the Officers selected from among the Directors. Terms run two years and are staggered, so seats cycle between odd and even years.

Current election: no nomination period is open right now. When the Governance Committee announces a schedule, the dates will be posted here and in The Question Mark. Questions: GovernanceCommittee@Spaatz.Org.

How an election works

  1. Nominations. Qualified members may nominate another member or nominate themselves during the published nomination period.
  2. Candidate review. After nominations close, TSA publishes the slate with each candidate’s vision statement and biography.
  3. Voting. Life members, current annual members and eligible New Spaatzen may vote while the ballot is open. Ballot instructions go to eligible members by email.

Election FAQ

Who may run for office?

Candidates must be dues-paid members or eligible New Spaatzen and otherwise qualified to hold office. Director and officer roles are working positions, not ceremonial titles.

How do I become a candidate?

Another member can nominate you, or you can nominate yourself. A nominee must accept the nomination and give complete contact information so the Election Commissioner can reach them.

What goes in a nomination packet?
  • A résumé describing your qualifications to serve on a nonprofit governing board
  • A brief vision statement describing your goals and how you’ll pursue them
  • A biography of 100 words or fewer for the Leadership page

Send the résumé and vision statement as separate Word or PDF files, within the length limits in the election notice. Incomplete packets aren’t considered after the deadline.

What is expected of directors?

Directors serve two-year terms, take part in regular Board meetings (monthly, by Zoom), and champion at least one TSA initiative. Service is unpaid. Conflict-of-interest disclosures, and for some roles a background check, may be required.

Who may vote?

Life members, current annual members and eligible New Spaatzen.
